Who’s the most important person in the world?

Over the last few months I have told the stories of strangers who have either inspired me or made my day brighter by getting to know them. I call them my soul shines.

Over the years, I have shared pictures, accomplishments and the love I have for my children on social media referring to them as my soul shines.

Let me introduce one of my most favorite soul shines!! Oakley Leland Dohnert born on this day 26 years ago! He is named after my grandfather, Oakley Justice. One of the best! I found out I was pregnant the day my grandfather passed. I knew, that day, he would proudly take his name.

Yesterday Oakley wanted to go for a late lunch so I met him. As we talked and I told him some stories of my recent trip, he said something like this “Mom, I don’t know if you remember this but at one point you told me…. ‘Nobody is better than you but you are no better than anyone else.’ He told me I taught them to be accepting of others, no matter what…. Meaning their race, their religion, their past.

He reminded me that I used to ask them….. “who’s the most important person in the world?” and that I told them to always love themselves so they could love others but do not be selfish. I love that he remembers that!!

Sometimes we get sucked into our own minds of insecurities and doubt. Sometimes we judge others for so many reasons we shouldn’t. Sometimes we make mistakes.

I’ve always known my kids would travel these paths, we all do, but I wanted them to know that it’s ok to go there, just come back and they have time and time again.

I am so so proud of this child!!! I’m not sure he realizes how much he has taught me. He is the kindest soul I know! He thinks and feels deeply, much like his mom. His heart is big, he is full of poems, quotes, lyrics and is incredibly talented! His laughter is contagious and he is extraordinary beyond measure!

As a bonus, over the years, I gained a sweet girl who I consider my own, one of Oakleys best friends, Candance, who shares the same birthday as his!

Happy Birthday baby boy and girl!!!! I love you both to the moon, the stars, Jupiter and Mars!
